Trichology in Barcelona

Trichology in Barcelona at Corium Dermatology

After several requests from our patients, at the Corium Dermatology clinic we have incorporated the trichology service by Dr . Víctor Cabezas.

What is trichology?

Trichology is the branch of dermatology that is dedicated to the study and treatment of hair and scalp problems; the professional specialist in trichology is called a trichologist.

Dr. Víctor Cabezas, our lead trichologist.

When should we see a trichologist?

If you notice that your hair is falling out more than usual, or that certain areas are beginning to lose density, it is time to visit a trichologist or request a first appointment to determine if we are facing one of the first phases of alopecia.

In addition, the trichologist (dermatologist specializing in hair) treats many other pathologies.

What hair pathologies does a trichology specialist treat?

When you go for a consultation, the dermatologist specializing in trichology will make a detailed evaluation of the scalp and hair. Among the pathologies they take care of are:

  • Hair loss (alopecia): Both androgenetic alopecia (common baldness) and other forms of alopecia such as alopecia areata.
  • Scalp problems: such as seborrheic dermatitis, scalp psoriasis, dandruff, among many others.
  • Scalp diseases: such as fungal infections of the scalp (e.g., tinea capitis).
  • Hair growth disorders: such as telogen effluvium (diffuse temporary hair loss), hair growth disorders, etc.
  • Scalp and hair follicle disorders: such as folliculitis (inflammation of the hair follicles).
  • Genetic and congenital disorders related to hair: such as hypotrichosis and other rare conditions.
  • Cosmetic and aesthetic problems of the hair: such as brittle, dehydrated, dull hair, among others.

How can laser therapy help us in hair loss?

Today, technology offers advanced and effective treatments to treat alopecia. One of the key advantages of lasers is that they have virtually no adverse effects and can be combined with different treatments.

The non-ablative fractional laser is the laser that has the best post-operative ratio/response of all available modalities.

Lasers that can be used in the treatment of androgenic alopecia are:

  • Low Intensity Light Therapy (LLLT).
  • 1,550nm Non-Ablative Fractional Laser
  • Fractional CO2 laser

All of them increase the number and thickness of hair. You can read in depth about laser therapy to stimulate blood circulation and promote hair growth, here.

Topical and oral medication for hair loss

In the case of men, only two drugs have been officially approved by the FDA (https://www.fda.gov/about-fda/fda-en-espanol), minoxidil and finasteride.

The treatment of choice for androgenic alopecia in men is the combination of oral minoxidil together with antiandrogens such as finasteride or dutasteride.

Both finasteride and dutasteride stop the progression of androgenic alopecia, increasing the number and thickness of hair in men from 3-6 months of consumption.

As for female androgenic alopecia: by means of antiandrogenic oral contraceptives (combinations of ethinyl estradiol with a gestagen with preferentially antiandrogenic action), the vaginal ring, spironolactone or metformin. Click here for more information.

Hair mesotherapy to revitalize the scalp

Another therapeutic option for alopecia is through the use of intracapillary injections. The injection of active ingredients into the scalp can be called mesotherapy. All drugs taken orally for androgenetic alopecia can infiltrate the scalp, thus minimizing the rate of adverse effects of the drugs. The injection of active ingredients into the scalp can be called mesotherapy.

Hair mesotherapy
All drugs taken orally for androgenetic alopecia can infiltrate the scalp.

In addition, all therapeutic modalities can be combined : topical, intralesional, oral and laser.

In our clinic, located in the center of Barcelona, we have a team of trichologists and the latest technology to offer an excellent service in the diagnosis and treatment of hair loss, the different forms of alopecia and other hair problems.
