Keloids or hypertrophic scars

Hypertrophic scars and keloids usually develop as a result of acne or surgical procedures. They can occur anywhere on the body, although they most commonly appear on the chest and back (in the case of acne) or on the pubic area (in the case of a cesarean section scar). They consist of raised scars that are pink or skin-colored and cause significant cosmetic concerns. In some cases, they can also be uncomfortable or painful.

Laser scar treatment

Scar treatment is often challenging and depends largely on the therapies the patient has previously tried and how long the scar has been present. For recent scars (less than four to six months old), laser scar treatment using a 1,540 nm non-ablative fractional erbium laser is very effective, as significant improvement is observed in most cases after just a few sessions.

For old scars and keloids, cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen combined with localized microinjections of betamethasone salts is effective. Along with this therapy, which requires several sessions, a synthetic polymer adhesive gel is applied to the scar. This treatment, when continued for several weeks, produces a noticeable improvement in the lesions in a comfortable and safe manner. In certain cases, it is possible to combine the aforementioned techniques with a 1,540-nm non-ablative fractional laser.

The 1540-nm non-ablative fractional laser, used at DermatologĂa Barcelona, is one of the first lasers approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration, U.S.) for cosmetic use due to its quality and safety profile. See more details here.
