Scars
Scars result from various types of skin damage. The most common types of scars are those caused by acne or previous surgeries. These scars can be atrophic (depressed), hypertrophic, or even keloids. In general, they represent a significant cosmetic issue.
On the face, atrophic acne scars are more common; they appear as small, reddish or skin-colored indentations. Sometimes they are widespread across the entire face and can give it an âetchedâ appearance.
Acne scar treatment
There are two basic methods for treating acne scars or atrophic facial scars. First, glycolic acid peels at various concentrations can be performed. These peels remove the outermost layers of the skin, giving it a more uniform appearance in terms of texture and color. They are remarkably effective, but only for the most superficial irregularities. For deeper facial scars, the treatment of choice is the non-ablative fractional laser. This device makes it possible to treat large areas comfortably and safely for the patient. This treatment is highly effective for acne scars, and excellent results are achieved with just a few sessions. The 1,540 nm non-ablative fractional laser was the first treatment method approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for this indication, due to its results and safety profile.
Each of the two acne scar treatmentsâchemical peels and laser therapyâhas its own optimal indications, and combining the two can be highly beneficial.
