False beliefs about hair

False beliefs hair

Does washing your hair daily cause more hair to fall out?

No. If the wash is gentle and does not dry the hair traumatically, it does not influence the hair bulb cycle and therefore does not increase hair loss.

Does the use of hairspray, gel or other hair cosmetics cause hair loss?

No product applied to the hair shaft has any effect on the bulb, so it does not cause hair loss. Cosmetics can be used without altering the hair cycle. What is possible is that some cosmetic component can cause allergic contact eczema on the skin.

Does the dryer damage the hair? What about the straightener?

If the dryer is applied at a certain distance and there are no burns in the hair bulb, it does not alter its cycle. On the other hand, the straightener does produce a drastic increase in temperature at the root of the hair and also mechanically pulls on it, so it is easy for hair to come off with this maneuver.

Do vitamin complexes work well for hair loss?

They usually have no effect on the hair. Unless the reason for hair loss is a specific deficiency (iron or amino acid), in general “vitamin” complexes or supplements do not have any proven action on the hair cycle. For this reason, it is interesting to first perform a blood test in case of persistent hair loss to rule out whether there is a deficiency or not and then perform the most appropriate treatment.

Are anti-hair loss shampoos effective?

No. There are no solid studies available to support the use of specific shampoos in hair loss. No shampoo (biotin, cystine, horse, etc.) has been shown to improve hair growth rates.

Does excess oil cause hair to fall out?

In isolation, no. Sebum has no action on the hair root. However, if you have a large amount of dandruff and inflammation on the scalp (seborrheic dermatitis and/or psoriasis), it is possible that the hair will shed in response to the aforementioned inflammation around the follicle.

When excess sebum is part of some complex syndromes (for example, accompanying polycystic ovary, acne or hypertrichosis), it is possible that this is the manifestation of an excess of androgens (male hormones) and there is a tendency to lose hair progressively (androgenetic alopecia) due to hormonal imbalance, but not due to sebum.

Is it true that hair falls out more in autumn?

Yes. In several published studies it has been observed that the maximum percentage of hairs in the telogen phase (shedding) occurs naturally in the month of September, which causes a loss of these follicular units in the following weeks.

Does cutting hair accelerate hair growth or vigor?

No. The length of the hair cycle is determined genetically, metabolically and seasonally, but it is not related to other external factors such as cutting it, applying shampoos, gels or other cosmetics.

Conclusion

It is important to consult your dermatologist when hair loss is observed so that an examination can be carried out and, when necessary, a complementary test to diagnose the type of hair loss suffered and provide the best treatment in each specific case.

After the examination, and given the persistence of hair loss, it is possible to perform a blood test to study factors that influence the biological cycle of the hair, such as thyroid hormone, iron or the male hormonal profile.
