The usual classification of acne scars distinguishes the following types of marks:
· Atrophic
· Rolling
· By boxcar
· Icepicks
· Hypertrophic or keloid
· Tunnels or winding tracts
However, with remarkable frequency, we find some types of acne scars that do not fall into this classification. Among them, the most notable are papular scars. Papular scars: a new type of acne mark, they usually appear on the chin, arms, chest or back and appear as small skin-colored papules, cupuliform, shiny and very soft to the touch (they sink easily under pressure). For some authors it reminds them of the appearance of a “cobblestone” or “cobblestone”, since several elements are usually grouped together.
It is interesting to add this type of papular acne scars to the usual classification, since its incidence is relatively high and its presence can have implications for the patient’s therapeutic plan.
In the opinion of the author of this article, papular acne scars are resistant to treatment and respond practically only to CO2 laser in the punctiform mode. In my experience, superficial peels and non-ablative lasers do not offer good results for these types of acne marks.
